For the width of the shade, measure the widest part of the lamp base then double it. this will give you the ideal width. These are just some general guidelines, and of course can be broken. sometimes a smaller height on a tall base can look very stylish and a taller shade on a smaller table lamp can look very retro. You just need to make sure you don't go too wide or too high as this can make it unstable.
